His Girl Friday charts the marriage and divorce and remarriage of Walter and Hildy and the engagement -- and near marriage -- of Hildy and Bruce. What is this film saying about that state of marriage in the modern world?
In the beginning of “His Girl Friday” we become aware that Hildy left Walter because she could not stand Walter treating her like a journalist instead of a wife, even though Hildy was a journalist for Walter. As the film progresses, Hildy becomes more devoted to the case she is writing about than the upcoming marriage of her new fiance, Bruce. Sadly, her fiance encourages Hildy’s passion for the case, which ultimatley leads to their separation. After Hildy finishes the story, she falls back in love with Walter. The final scene shows both of them talking to each other, while Walter is talking on the phone with another person. Then he says that they will be married again casually to the person on the phone. Hildy does not object, rather asking which honeymoon spot they should go to. This final scene shows how the film portrays marriage in the modern world: a secondary aspect to people’s careers. Especially for the newspaper business, where work is almost 24-7. Marriage is not as important as their jobs. Ironically, Hildy seemed to have discovered that in the beginning of the movie and that is why she left Walter and went for Bruce: so she could have a normal life and a normal marriage. But, her obsession for journalism would not work for the lifestyle she was planning with Bruce but would rather work for Walter.
This film is showing that marriage in the modern world is very chaotic and able to be redirected by the smallest of events. In the film the characters are unable to be in a relationship and stay in it concretely. T=Hildy was divorced but still engaged in witty conversations with Walter and she let him manipulate her throught the weakness of Bruce. She wanted to runanway with Bruce and start a normal life, yet she was slowly being convinced that she needed to return to the newspaper. Walter was the buggest factor in this diconnect and recconect of relationships. He was able to marry Hildy, divorce her, get between Hildy and Bruce, and get Hildy back with him. Besised the story and what the characters had shown, the film aslo sends a messsage that relationships are dominated by what your are doing and what you want to. If you don't have a clear consise idea of what you what you want then your relationships will never be strong enough to hold up against manipulation, such as that of Hildy and Bruce.
His Girl Friday is a film that shows a lot of important stereotypes and standards that were held back then about marriage. In this film Hildy is a dominate woman who flops back and forth between two prominent men, Bruce and Walter. I actually believe that in order to portray herself as being strong and dominate she switches back and forth between her two loves as if it is easy however, I do agree that this is cover for her not being sure about who she is. She is starving to try to make a statement. However, the magic that she uses is working because she has her ex-husband Walter head over hills for her and is willing to do just about anything to get her back. Hildy has this genuine love for Walter deep down inside. However, she doesn’t want him to think he has power over her in anyway. Her obsolete love for Bruce is very evident and just uses him as a back up because she can. This shows that in many ways, in the modern world marriage has become a joke and the movie mad a mockery of modern marriage. It shows that often time we have to question what are the real reasons as to why people jump in relationships and why are so quick to marry their spouse. It wasn’t as obvious but made you wonder what is the real reason as to why Hildy skipped her way back into Walter’s arms. Who knows her real reason for being with him. Was it because they are both interested in the newspaper industry or was it actually love?
In His Girl Friday HIldy is a strong, invididual, dominant woman that has feelings for both her Ex-husband, Walter, and her fiance, Bruce. Throughout the film she is able to go back and forth between her two loves, toying with the two gentlemans feelings. The film is showing that marriage can be changed very quickly by small things such as a job. Hildy had a strong passion for the newspaper. She loved the thrill of reporting a big story and the constant movement that comes along with it. WIth Walter she could have all of these things that she truely enjoyed, but with Bruce it was a different life. She would be settling in as a wife, strongly dependent on her husband to makes ends meet, and live to grow old without pursing her dreams. I believe that the state of marriage in the modern world is a very tricky situation. Some people would choose the Bruce route and live to grow old as a house wife. Others would choose the Walter route and enjoy the constant work but very little home life. The choice is between how much time one wants to spend with their spouse and if they want to sacrifice their careers as well.
His Girl Friday is probably one of my favorite movies that we have watched so far in this class, because of its satirical comedy like how Hilde after divorcing Walter because he only treated her like a journalist, but ironically journalism is the job that she loved most in the world and she certainly had talent for it. I found it a little too easy to see that Hilde was eventually going to end up back in Walter's arms by the time the film was over. She just wasn't the type of woman to settle down and live a normal life with Bruce, when she had the option to continue doing what she loved with Walter in the short term even if it costs her the respect she wants in the long term.

ReplyDeleteHis Girl Friday is a film about two newspaper reporters, Hildy and Walter, who mistakenly use their marriage as a means of thwarting their dangerous addiction to the newspaper industry. The fact that Hildy transitions from her ex-husband Walter to her new fiancĂ© Bruce in such a short period of time portrays her as vulnerable and unsure of herself, begging the question “Is Hildy truly in love or is she just in love with the newspaper industry?” Both Hildy and Walter seem at home amidst the chaos in the newsroom, slewing newspaper jargon and marching around like they own the place, while Hildy’s new fiancĂ© Bruce acts standoffish. Hildy is quick to sacrifice Bruce when she realizes that he does not fit into her world anymore making the audience question the authenticity of Hildy’s intentions regarding her re-marriage with Bruce. Walter, a newspaper reporter himself, is portrayed as a hero who is morally flawed. Attracted to Hildy because she shares his passion for the newspaper industry, he will do whatever it takes to get Hildy back for himself including lying constantly and even getting Bruce thrown in jail! It is clear that Hildy’s relationship with Bruce is merely an attempt to thwart her addition to the newspaper industry and is not sincere. But it is Hildy’s relationship with Walter that is more dangerous because they both feed off of each other’s addictions, which is why they divorced in the first place. The film portrays the transition from the traditional married “couple” to a more modern perception of marriage where each spouse has individual intentions and are therefore autonomous from each other.
