I think that the Kings Speech will win best picture. The qualities that win best picture I believe are originality but with a classic story line. A man with a severe stuttering problem, who is forced to be the king of England and rally his people to go to war is a very interesting, original story. The movie was very relatable, honest, and classic. Also, I think Colin Firth will when best actor because he portrayed this character perfectly. He seemed very natural at the role. For best actress, I think Natalie Portman in Black Swan will win because she also was very natural in her role as a ballerina who is going crazy. At the end of the movie I forgot that she was acting because she transformed so much it was scary.
When making a movie based on a book, a film crew can go one of two ways. They can attempt to convey the book as best as possible on screen and attempt to produce what the reader imagines in their heads, or they can try and recreate the books’ plots into the directors point of view. For best Art Direction, Stuart Craig deserves to win with his recreation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. He manages to keep a cherished books’ plot in tact, yet create scenes beyond anyone’s imagination. He took J.K. Rowlings’ work and spun it in his own direction while still keeping the original plot line intact. While Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the darkest and gloomiest of the book series, Rowling still found a way to keep it childish and inspiring. Craig on the other hand wanted to make the scenes twisted and even darker in order to make the drama more tangible. He put his own take on Rowlings’ seventh book and put it on screen. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One is Craigs’ imagination and adaptation along with Rowlings’ original masterpiece. By being able to create an original version of her work, Craig should be awarded the Oscar for best Art Direction.
